South-South Cooperation and Climate Action

South-South Cooperation plays a pivotal role in the broader context of climate action by fostering collaboration among developing nations in the Global South. Given their shared vulnerabilities to climate change, these countries benefit from the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and resources. By working together, they can accelerate the implementation of sustainable development initiatives, renewable energy projects, and climate adaptation strategies. This collaborative approach not only strengthens individual nations but also contributes to the overall global effort to address the challenges of climate change.

UNOSSC at Conferences of the Parties (COP)

The Conference of the Parties (COP), is held annually, with the Presidency rotating between the five recognized UN regions. This year, Azerbaijan has been selected as the Presidency of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), to be hosted in Baku this November.

UNOSSC advances policy choices for all South-South and triangular cooperation stakeholders

South-South cooperation is key to mobilizing regional climate finance solutions and regional climate finance mechanisms tailored to their specific needs, ensuring a just transition that prioritizes the rights and livelihoods of communities in developing countries. By aligning policies that promote inclusive economic development while moving away from fossil fuels, countries in the Global South can develop transition strategies that address their unique adaptation and mitigation challenges while emphasizing social equity, job creation, and poverty alleviation, ensuring no one is left behind.

South-South and triangular partnerships deliver results that make a significant effect impact

The private sector in developing countries must leverage South-South cooperation to identify regional investment opportunities in green technologies and renewable energy projects. By pooling resources and expertise, businesses across the Global South can create new economic opportunities while contributing to climate action. Civil society organizations have a crucial role in facilitating South-South cooperation by empowering local communities, advocating for inclusive climate policies, and ensuring that climate solutions are context-specific. Promoting grassroots collaboration across the Global South will help achieve a just transition that uplifts vulnerable populations.

UNOSSC is a robust knowledge hub and partner of choice in South-South and triangular cooperation capacity building

South-South cooperation provides an opportunity for countries to share successful strategies and technologies related to climate resilience and sustainability. By exchanging knowledge and expertise, such as in renewable energy deployment, water management, and disaster response, developing countries can collectively strengthen their ability to meet climate goals without relying solely on traditional international funding sources.

South-South Trust Funds offer a value-added for all partners in inclusive demand-driven initiatives

By providing targeted funding to the most vulnerable and marginalized communities, UNOSSC-managed South-South Trust Funds ensure that climate actions are equitable and inclusive. Through capacity building and sharing of successful practices, technologies, and experiences, South-South Trust Fund programming protects communities of the Global South disproportionately affected by climate change.
