Data to Policy Network for Policymakers Launches Workshop Series on Multidimensional Poverty

May 30, 2024

New York, 30 May 2024 – The Data to Policy Network for policymakers launched a workshops series focused on Multidimensional Poverty. The series, which will be divided into three separate sessions, aims to equip policymakers with the knowledge and tools they need to effectively address multidimensional poverty in your respective countries and regions, and support South-South and triangular exchanges of experiences and good practices in utilizing the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) not only as a measure of poverty, but as a means to tackle it.

Joined by policymakers from all regions, the first session focused on the theoretical and conceptual aspects of multidimensional poverty. The following sessions, on 20 and 27 June 2024, will build on use cases from various regions, supporting networking, South-South exchanges, and mutual learning on using the MPI for tackling multidimensional poverty.

Welcoming policymakers, Zanofer Ismalebbe, Chief, Knowledge Management, UNOSSC emphasized the comparative advantage of the network and UNOSSC in leading the implementation of the specific work on ‘use cases’. He also mentioned that by leveraging comprehensive data, the MPI offers a nuanced view beyond income, capturing deprivations in health, education, and living standards, and represents an important opportunity for Governments to learn from each other on the practical use of MPI for more evidence-based policy making.

South-South and triangular cooperation is playing a key role in fostering partnerships and knowledge exchanges. Sharing experiences and best practices across regions can facilitate effective policy design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
