For a high-energy kick-off, on Wednesday, 10 March 2021 at 9:00AM (New York time) the United Nations is hosting a virtual launch for the “High-level Dialogue on Energy 2021: A Year of Energy Action”. The launch marks the start of substantive preparations for the Dialogue, to be convened by the UN Secretary-General at the summit level in September 2021, under the auspices of the General Assembly.
The launch will include brief video statements by Ministers from over twenty Member States serving as Global Champions for the Dialogue. They are expected to call for urgent action to achieve clean, affordable energy for all (SDG 7) by 2030 and a just, inclusive energy transition. Also featured will be video remarks from the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres; United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Under-Secretary-General Liu Zhenmin in his capacity as Dialogue Secretary-General; and the Dialogue Co-Chairs, Achim Steiner, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator, and Damilola Ogunbiyi, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, as well as by the heads of organizations serving as Co-Leads of the five Technical Working Groups.
The High-level Dialogue on Energy will be convened at the summit level by the UN Secretary-General in September 2021 under the auspices of the UN General Assembly. It presents a historic opportunity to mobilize transformational action to achieve SDG 7, ensure a just and inclusive energy transition and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
