On 10 July 2024, on the margins of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and PARIS21 are co-hosting a Data to Policy Network side event on Democratizing Gender Data for Better Policymaking. The interactive panel will champion the local solutions and insights that are bridging gender data gaps and increasing the uptake of gender data in policymaking around the world.

Traditional data silos have long prevented gender insights from reaching policymakers. There is often a mismatch between the complex data delivered by statisticians and the simple, relevant and timely formats needed by policymakers. This undermines their ability to effectively address the needs of women and girls and advance SDG 16 ‘‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’.

In this vein, this 60-minute event will cover how we can democratize gender data, making it more accessible, understandable and actionable across all departments and stakeholders. Specifically, the event will spotlight 3 successful approaches:

  1. Connecting: How might we break down silos between government officials, statisticians, journalists, academics and civil society?
  2. Communicating: How do we present, package and share data in a compelling way? What role can civil society play in developing these narratives given they know the local context best?
  3. Capacity-building: What needs to shift in our current approach to improve capacity development?

As we gear up for this year’s HLPF, where SDG 16 takes center stage, the importance of gender-disaggregated data becomes increasingly important. By adopting robust gender-sensitive measures, governments can enhance their resilience and better navigate the complex challenges we face today with an emphasis on equity and justice.

Objectives

  • Inspire policymakers globally to become gender data champions in their ministries
  • Guide other stakeholders on how they can more effectively support policymakers, whether through data collection, analysis and interpretation, or packaging and communication.
