For the fifth consecutive year, FAO, IFAD and WFP are jointly organizing the celebration of the UN Day for South-South Cooperation (UN Day for SSC) – an annual event marked on 12 September 2021. This year, the RBAs event will take place on 17 September and will build on the commitment and focus of the RBAs to agri-food systems transformation.
The RBAs Celebration of the UN Day for SSC will focus on making voices from the Global South and the North heard on their challenges, approaches and plans for agri-food systems transformation. The event will provide a space for Member States to reflect on how to leverage South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) across country-led food systems agenda, building on previous successful SSTC experiences. The findings of the event will help in shaping the joint RBAs agenda on SSTC for the coming years, to ensure that RBA-facilitated SSTC remains relevant to support country-led progress on food security and nutrition.
RBAs brokered South-South and Triangular Cooperation has proven, to date, to have a catalytic and complementary role in coalescing synergies, solutions and skills. Promoting SSTC, which enables the sharing of knowledge, experiences, technologies, resources among countries in the Global South, has an important role to play in sharing and bringing effective approaches for more sustainable and inclusive agri-food systems.
Beyond knowledge exchange, peer learning and technology transfer, SSTC can be catalytic to generating greater returns for developing countries, by strengthening regional value chains and trade and by opening new market opportunities and investments.
Newer forms of partnerships are needed to advance in the 2030 Agenda, including reinvigorated North-South Partnerships and South-South and Triangular Cooperation. These transformative partnerships can include governments, development partners, regional organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector.
The RBAs collaboration on SSTC can play a key role in facilitating innovative partnerships and coalitions to ensure food security and resilient livelihoods, promote innovations, and better catalyze investment for more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agri-food systems.
