The 2021 session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Forum on Financing for Development Follow-up, also known as the FfD Forum, is scheduled to convene from 12-15 April 2021. The outcome document is being negotiated under the leadership of the Permanent Representatives of Fiji and the Netherlands.

Background

The FfD Forum is an intergovernmental process with universal participation mandated to review the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (Addis Agenda) and other financing for development outcomes and the means of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 2021 session of the Forum will aim to advance dialogue on solutions for financing the COVID-19 recovery and sustainable development on the path to 2030, and to build momentum for urgent action for achieving the seven areas of the Addis Agenda. The FACTI Panel will address the session on illicit financial flows, following the release of its final report on 25 February 2021.

The session also may seek to integrate the menu of policy options developed through an initiative of the Governments of Canada and Jamaica and the UN Secretary-General on financing the 2030 Agenda in the era of COVID-19 and beyond.

Objectives

The 2021 ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development will build on the work of various processes, including the high-level initiative on financing for development in the era of COVID-19 and beyond. It aims to achieve two main objectives:

  1. Driving high-level political engagement to advance priority actions that will set the world on track for the recovery and beyond; and
  2. Promoting the sharing of concrete national, regional and global experiences and initiatives on financing the SDGs in a rapidly evolving context.
